Our next writing assignment is going to combine the practice of a few different writing styles as students will be composing an autobiography. This will require some help from parents to recall any interesting birth stories or any other fun facts that you can remember about your child! There will be an opportunity, as we get closer to finishing this project, for some pictures to be added. Maybe February vacation would be a good time to reminisce, take a trip down memory lane and look through some old family albums!
In math we have been making steady progress with multiplication through the 5xs tables. There will be a test before vacation and we will be continuing our practice with higher times tables. We have also been taking some class time to work on Rocket Math. For those of you not familiar with Rocket Math, it is a series of timed tests, which works to help students become faster with their knowledge of basic math facts. We are working on basic addition facts for the time being, but I hope to continue to make more progress after returning from vacation.
In Science we are preparing for a test to complete our chapter on Mass and Matter and if the weather cooperates we will be able to start a new chapter before vacation.
In Social Studies we have been looking at maps in class and discussing the some geological terms. Our next feat will be learning the names of the Continents and large bodies of water.
Lastly, as far as reading is concerned, please take some time to go onto the Renaissance website to help your child look at the list of books they should access to on their “bookshelf.” This is a great resource to help your child find a book that is reading level appropriate. The students should ALWAYS have a free reading book to keep at their desk, and they are aware that upon completion of a book they should inform myself or Mrs. Powers so that they can take the online reading test to check their comprehension.
As much as I love the snow, I can only hope that the worst of the weather has passed and that it will be smooth sailing from now until February Vacation!
